Resolving to be a cleaner you in the new year
Ahh, New Year’s Day — a time for celebration and self-reflection.
Do you have a resolution this year? Oh, you want to keep your space clean throughout the year? That’s magnificent! It’ll change your outlook on life and save you time and effort. It’ll even save you money!
Are you worried about making such a drastic change? Aw, don’t worry, it’s a snap! I have some ideas to help you keep your cleaning resolution. Let’s get you on the road to a cleaner you in 2022!
Be Clear and Concise
Clean with intention. If you don’t know why you need to clean something, you probably don’t need to clean it right away. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with cleaning your things that don’t immediately need it. You don’t want to tire yourself out with those things before you get to what needs cleaning, though. It’ll deter you from completing your cleaning tasks — and from keeping the long-term goal of keeping your space clean.
Write your cleaning plan from most to least urgent. That’ll make you clean more efficiently. If you’re in a time crunch (i.e., you’re cleaning your workspace, or while your young children are sleeping), schedule your cleaning during the easiest days and times for you.
Work Smarter, Not Harder
You don’t have to wait to clean until your tasks are seemingly insurmountable! That’ll just leave you overwhelmed and ready to give up. Make your life easier; make a separate cleaning to-do list, and sort it by tasks you can complete daily, weekly, monthly, or seasonally. Add them to your routine!
Spend up to a half-hour doing your daily cleaning tasks. Those will mainly be centered on you (and your household) — that is, you and your household will have to tidy up after yourselves.
Clean as (instead of after) you cook, and throw away your trash as soon as you can. Keep a trash receptacle in every room, so it won’t feel like you’re making some arduous journey (or wasting your time) just to throw away your candy wrapper. Keep the mildew in your bathroom at bay by leaving the door open after you wash your body.
The focus for your weekly tasks will be sanitation (removing dust and grime), and you’ll focus on disinfecting your space (keeping the grime away) during the monthly tasks. Move furniture to get rid of dirt for seasonal tasks.
Make It a Family Affair
Get everyone involved. Make sure the tasks you give to your child are realistic; a six-year-old won’t be able to lift their mattress to vacuum under the bed, but they can make a bed.
You won’t overwork yourself cleaning for multiple, and that’s great. Additionally, you’ll instill a sense of routine and responsibility in your children.
Keep At It
You may find that you aren’t as enthused to keep your New Year’s cleaning resolution by the beginning of March as you were on January 2nd. I know the tasks are annoying, but don’t give up on them. Your to-do list will get easier to manage over the year. You’ll look around your clean space this time next year and be so thankful you didn’t toss your lists!
