Why Deep Cleaning Your School Is Necessary

Why Deep Cleaning Your School Is Necessary

A good cleaning schedule is important for a school to have, not just for sanitation reasons, but for shaping lives. We talked about that a couple of weeks ago. To be honest, though, regular cleaning doesn’t mean much if there’s not a deep cleaning routine happening at least quarterly. Regular cleaning is still necessary, but deep cleaning allows for cleanliness you can’t get from regular cleaning alone, no matter how good at it you are.

What’s the difference between regular cleaning and deep cleaning, you may ask. Regular cleaning would be the smaller tasks you do to make your space more habitable — for example, doing dishes, wiping down surfaces, mopping, vacuuming, and other things of that nature. Deep cleaning, as its name implies, goes further than regular cleaning; its tasks are more intensive than regular cleaning tasks, and you would use a sanitizer or disinfectant rather than a cleaner to do them. The goal of deep cleaning is to bust grime, while regular cleaning intends to keep grime away.

OK, so why is deep cleaning important for your schools? One word: traffic. A lot of the staff and students stay in schools for, on average in the United States, 6.64 hours a day. It’s easy to produce massive amounts of dirt and grime with the daily foot traffic in schools, so it’s imperative to keep floors (both hard surface, like wood and laminate, and carpet) thoroughly clean. That means using cleaner, which removes dirt, and then disinfectant, which eliminates bacteria and viruses, to deep clean.

The communal spaces in a school (the bathrooms, gym, locker room, classrooms, kitchen, cafeteria, etc.) should be deep cleaned, too. Areas like this are hotspots for grime; lots of people are transferring the grime they brought in by touching things in these rooms. Sanitize the doorknobs and light switches, wipe down desks and chairs, and clean the walls around trash cans and recycling bins; many people use these things throughout the day, and those things get germy.

You need to pay special attention to the plumbing-reliant areas or anywhere food is served in a school, because flushing a toilet and other spatters spray germs around. In cases like these, you would need to clean the whole room. The toilets, sinks, stoves — even the walls and ceilings. You should clean the rooms from the top down, because the grime will fall and settle on a lower surface, and you don’t want to end up recleaning a surface you already cleaned!

You are dealing with many different populations in a school; some people may be more sensitive than others when it comes to smelling different scents. That’s why it’s important not to do your deep cleaning when school is in session. You don’t want people, especially young ones, to huff any kinds of cleaner or disinfectant.

Sometimes the cleaners/disinfectants used for deep cleaning need to soak for some time to be more effective — e.g., carpet cleaner needs to sit in the carpet for a while or some disinfectant may need to sit on the stove to eliminate grime.

Deep cleaning an entire school is a concerted effort. For the sake of time, it would be wise to call a professional cleaning service, like Andy’s Quality Cleaning, for help.
